Must have already been mentioned, but what was the name of the horse that I think was a flat 2 miler and used to just fucking smash it at the front?

Persian Punch?

Poor bugger died after a race, but was a proper warrior.

The horse in Rentaghost.

Mtoto was one that was very kind to me - a rarity that could quicken beautifully in a group 1- was in retirement close to me so had a special affinity.

Also a modest filly we landed a "famous" coup on in 2012.

Re: Your favourite race horse of all time?
There's only 2 that have made me feel emotional

Dancing Brave - absolute monster of a horse and should have been retired after destroying a world class field in the Arc. It was a tragedy that Starkey fucked up the Derby and he deserved to be mugged off for Pat Eddery.

Desert Orchid - went from a decent horse to a Gold Cup winner. Peter O'Sulivan's commentary of the closing stages still gets me nearly 30 years on

"...he's beginning to get up ..... there's a tremendous cheer from the crowd ..."

Awesome stuff

I have a soft spot and a place on my wall for an old yank filly called Ruffian.... had to be the best looking horse that God created.... brilliant book and a good film about her and her tragic short life story... if you watch her You tube races she is quite something else...

Lucien Laurin, trainer of the great Secretariat, whose own racing career had ended just as Ruffian’s began, was quoted as saying:

“As God is my witness, she may be better than Secretariat.”

Dawn Run's gold cup win in 1986 was a hell of a race, looked beaten coming to the last
She won the Champion Hurdle previously amazing horse.

Never really had one, though used to like the tussles between the likes of Kuato Star and Denman.

Frankel the best I've seen and for people who say all the crap about him not beating other horses, he was literally hardly ever pressed such was his class. And he had Queally riding him!

Honourable mention for The Snail, who gave a few of us a lot of laughs on here, even though I'm about 50 notes down on the fucker.

another of mine was Phillip Hobbs's Monkerhostin. i used to bet every year on Cheltenham with a mate who'd split the stake and in 2004 we almost won a lot of money. we did a £10ew trixie on Fork Lightning 14, Monkerhostin 8/1 & Impek 6/1. we picked up just short of £1500 for the double but sadly the slang Impek let us down on Gold Cup day. Monkerostin set it up though winning the Coral Cup on the Wednesday, later went on to win the Whitbread Gold Cup at Sandown

Re: Your favourite race horse of all time?
For me as a kid I had my first gamble. Advised by my mate who knew all about these things, he said I should bet on a double and he put the bet on for me.

He said I should pick a favourite on short odds and one with better odds. I picked a nag called Grey Of Falloden which was high odds and got so excited when we watched it win surprisingly. Then the short odds favourite I paired it with had me working out how much I was going to win...

It came nowhere so I lost and so I never caught the gambling drug. Grey Of Falloden though I never forgot and it went on to win a few big races iirc...

Re: Your favourite race horse of all time?
Yes, good idea to remain on favourite as opposed to best, however Dancing Brave remains my favourite. The manner of winning was so dramatic and breathtaking, just an adrenaline rush watching it when you knew what was coming.

The Derby he lost was remarkable in it's own way, it was like Champion the wonder horse in the last furlong or so. Everything else seems to be in slow motion. If I remember rightly Shahrastani went on to win the Irish Derby next time out by 8 lengths and was a decent Derby winner.

Re: Your favourite race horse of all time?
Great thread, But remember to keep in focus "favourite" not "greatest" . So Evan Williams' great Ludlow specialist, a household favourite a few years back , The Snail is on a par with Dancing Brave or whoever.

Funny mention of Dancing Brave made me wonder about ,(and dont get me wrong im not saying that G.F was better), Edderys statement that Golden Fleece was the best he had sat on and I looked it up and found.........................

1982
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_Fleece_(horse)

"His winning time of 2:34.27[8] was the fastest for almost fifty years. After the race, Eddery called Golden Fleece "the best horse I have ever sat on"

1986
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dancing_Brave

' Eddery called Dancing Brave the best horse he ever rode, and a "once in a lifetime ride", while Khalid Abdulla described him as the outstanding horse to have carried his colours. Guy Harwood called him "very much the best I trained".

The funny thing about Golden Fleece was the more he kept winning prior to Epsom ,the more Mike Dillon kept opposing him and the more money piled on from Ballydoyle Ladbrokes for one took a woeful battering on that result 3/1 FFS, Id love to hear Dillons opinion of the horse now!
